Selected examples of the image of deformed human body in photography and video-art in the second half of the 20th century

Głównym problemem pracy jest deformacja i niekonwencjonalne sposoby przedstawiania ciała w fotografii i video-art II połowy XX wieku w oparciu zarówno o wybrane przykłady rodzime, jak i powstałe poza granicami Polski. We wstępie pracy, podzielonym na dwie części, zawarte zostały stan badań oraz rys historyczny pojęcia deformacja. Zostaje tu zwrócona uwaga nie tylko na samą definicję oraz etymologię pojęcia, lecz także na sposoby interpretacji zagadnień pokrewnych, tj. brzydoty i wstrętu. Rys historyczny zawiera skrócony przegląd występowania zjawiska deformacji w dziełach artystów poszczególnych epok, począwszy od czasów antycznych. W dalszej części pracy podejmuję próbę podziału prac wybranych artystów XX-wiecznych na trzy kolejne grupy, nazwane umownie grupami istnienia, zniekształcenia oraz inscenizacji. Pierwszą kategorię reprezentują dzieła, które ukazują osoby zniekształcone przez chorobę, wypadek czy niefortunne zrządzenie losu. Artysta uwieczniający na fotografii ludzi kalekich i chorych wciela się w rolę reportażysty, który mniej lub bardziej ingeruje w odbiór dzieła. Kolejna grupa to wyraźnie już stylizowane figury ludzkie przypominające Lalki Hansa Bellmera. Fotografowie testują oraz wiążą ciała, z premedytacją je w ten sposób deformując. Ostatnią z grup tworzą przedstawienia z kręgu zniekształceń w obrębie osobowości człowieka. Artyści wnikają tu w pozornie zniekształconą psychikę, która uwidacznia się w warstwie zewnętrznej fotografowanych postaci. Pracę kończę rozważaniami na temat tego, w jak różne sposoby można rozumieć pojęcie deformacji oraz jak wiele efektów artystycznych można uzyskać, stosując ją w fotografii.

The study was undertaken to analyze deformation and unconventional ways of presenting body in photography and video-art of the second half of twentieth century, basing on both the selected vernacular examples and those arisen out of Poland. In the introduction, divided into two parts, the state of research and historical picture of the notion of deformation were presented. The attention was paid not only to the definition and etymology of the notion, but also on the ways of the interpretation of the related questions, that is ugliness and disgust. Historical picture includes the brief overview of the deformation phenomenon in the works of artists of different periods, starting from ancient times. The further part of the work was a trial to divide the works of the selected artists of the twentieth century into the next three groups, conventionally called the groups of existence, distortion and staging. The first category is represented by the works that show people disfigured by disease, accidents or unfortunate twist of fate. The artist photographing crippled and sick people takes on the role of a reporter, who more or less interferes with the reception of the work. Another group is created by clearly stylized human figures resembling Hans Bellmer’s Dolls. Photographers are testing and associating bodies, thus deforming them with premeditation. The last group has been formed to present the circle of distortion within the human personality. The artists penetrate in a seemingly distorted psyche, which is reflected in the outer layer of the photographed characters. The work is concluded with deliberations on the different ways to understand the concept of deformation and on how many artistic effects can be achieved by applying deformation in photography.
