Zombification of British Literary Classics as Depicted in Seth Grahame-Smith's Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Isaac Marion's Warm Bodies

Celem niniejszej pracy jest zdefiniowanie pojęcia zombie, odkrycie jego genezy oraz przybliżenie fenomenu zombifikacji we współczesnej zachodniej kulturze popularnej. Praca podaje kilka przykładów tekstów kultury o tej tematyce („Białe Zombie” w reżyserii Victora Halperina i „Noc Żywych Trupów” George'a Romero), głównie skupiając się na „Dumie i Uprzedzeniu i Zombie” autorstwa Setha Grahame-Smitha oraz „Ciepłych Ciałach” Isaaca Mariona. Najistotniejsze kwestie pracy to: podejście obu autorów do zombifikacji, metody, których używają, korzystając z fenomenu zombie i tego, co sobą reprezentują oraz pytanie, czy zombifikacja tworzy, czy jest tworem kultury popularnej.

The purpose of this dissertation is to identify the nature and origin of zombies, and to explain why they are so widespread. The thesis seeks to define the notion of zombification and its role in shaping contemporary Western popular culture. Mentioning a few examples of well-known zombie-themed works (Victor Halperin's White Zombie, George Romero's Night of the Living Dead), the thesis focuses on two prominent illustrations of zombification: Seth Grahame-Smith's Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Isaac Marion's Warm Bodies. The most important issues explored in this thesis are the approaches to the subject matter chosen by both authors, their methods of availing of zombies and of what they represent, and whether zombification shapes popular culture or is shaped by it.
