Mental Illness and Social Frames in The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath and “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

The purpose of this thesis is to analyse and discuss the influence of social factors on women’s life in the 19th and 20th century in the United States. These inequalities lead to depression and health problems. The discussion is based on Betty Friedan’s research in The Feminine Mystique and an analysis of the characters from the novel The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath and the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The first chapter of the thesis presents women’s position in the society and the oppression of women in 1950s and 1960s. The second chapter consists of an analysis of The Bell Jar. The discussion focuses on the main character’s attitude, feelings and mental state. The third chapter analyses the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper”. The example of the main character shows social patterns imposed on women which lead to depression.

Praca dyplomowa analizuje wpływ czynników społecznych na życie kobiet w XIX i XX wieku w Stanach Zjednoczonych, które prowadziły do depresji i problemów zdrowotnych. Analiza opiera się na badaniach Betty Friedan opublikowanych w „Mistyce kobiecości” oraz na analizie bohaterek powieści „Szklany klosz” autorstwa Sylwii Plath oraz opowiadania „Żółta tapeta” Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Rozdział pierwszy pracy prezentuje pozycje kobiety w społeczeństwie i opresje związane z tą rolą w latach 50. i 60. XX wieku. Podstawą przeprowadzonych badań są spostrzeżenia Betty Friedan na temat społeczeństwa zawarte w książce „Mistyka kobiecości”. Rozdział drugi składa się z analizy „Szklango klosza” skupiając się na postawie, uczuciach i stanie psychicznym głównej bohaterki.Rozdział trzeci analizuje opowiadanie „Żółta tapeta” autorstwa Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Na przykładzie zachowań głównej bohaterki zaprezentowane zostają schematy społeczne narzucone kobietom, które doprowadzają je do depresji.
