"Masculine Guns and Feminine Tears: Gender Roles in the TV show Peaky Blinders"

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the portrayal of gender in the first season of the BBC drama television series Peaky Blinders (2013-present). The thesis focuses on men and women, with special emphasis put on the historical, social and political background of the series’ plot. The main questions of the thesis concern gender roles within the television series, how gender is represented and what kinds of femininity and masculinity are shown. The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter begins with a short description of the main male characters and proceeds to explain the effects of the First World War on the early 20th-century society and the men of the series. The second chapter is concerned with the violent behaviour of the male characters of the series and explains the main concepts of masculinity seen in Peaky Blinders. The third chapter discusses the way in which women are portrayed in the television series, which erroneously comes across as unconventional. The thesis ends with a conclusion that Peaky Blinders, as a gangster genre, only portrays and does not challenge traditional social gender norms, which are still dominant today.

Niniejsza praca analizuje przedstawienie płci w pierwszym sezonie serialu telewizyjnego BBC Peaky Blinders (2013-obecnie). Koncentruje się ona na mężczyznach i kobietach, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem tła historycznego, społecznego i politycznego fabuły serialu. Główne pytania pracy dotyczą ról związanych z płcią przedstawianą w kolejnych odcinkach, tj. tego, w jaki sposób płeć jest reprezentowana oraz jakie rodzaje kobiecości i męskości są kreowane w serialu. Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów. Pierwszy rozpoczyna się krótkim opisem głównych męskich postaci i wyjaśnia wpływ I Wojny Światowej na społeczeństwo XX wieku, w tym bohaterów serialu. Drugi rozdział dotyczy brutalnego zachowania mężczyzn w serialu i wyjaśnia główne pojęcia męskości widoczne w Peaky Blinders. Trzeci rozdział omawia kreację kobiet w serialu, która błędnie uchodzi za alternatywną. Praca kończy się wnioskiem, iż Peaky Blinders, jako gatunek gangsterski, przedstawia tradycyjne i nadal dominujące normy społeczne dotyczące płci, nie podejmując próby ich kwestionowania.
