A Comparative Analysis of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and Its Two Screen Adaptations.

W mojej pracy licencjackiej porównuję i analizuję dwie wersje filmowe Wielkich Nadziei z oryginalną powieścią Charlesa Dickensa, mianowicie wersję amerykańską z roku 1998 w reżyserii Alfonso Cuaróna oraz wersję brytyjską wyprodukowaną w roku 2012, której reżyserem jest Mike Newell. W pierwszym rozdziale krótko prezentuję życiorys Charlesa Dickensa, jego karierę oraz spuściznę literacką, jak również zwięźle przedstawiam realia epoki wiktoriańskiej. Rozdział drugi prezentuje początki Wielkich Nadziei oraz ich fabułę z równoczesną analizą formy, motywów przewodnich i bohaterów książki. W rozdziale trzecim koncentruję się na prezentacji zagadnienia jakim jest adaptacja filmowa. Przedstawiam krótko historie adaptacji dzieła Dickensa i prezentuję informacje, które mogą okazać się pomocne w ich lepszym zrozumieniu. Dwa ostatnie rozdziały koncentrują się na wyżej wymienionych filmach. Przedstawiam w nich różnice jakie występują pomiędzy filmami a powieścią Dickensa oraz rozpatruję jak twórcy filmowi interpretują ten klasyk literacki i dlaczego.

In my bachelor thesis, I compare and analyse two cinematic versions of Great Expectations with the original novel by Charles Dickens: the American film from 1998 directed by Alfonso Cuarón and the British production from 2012 created by Mike Newell. In the first chapter I briefly outline the life of Charles Dickens, his literary career and legacy, as well as the reality of Victorian England. The second chapter analyses the early days of the novel and introduces the plot of the book, examining its form, the main themes and characters. The third chapter discusses novel-to-film adaptations, introduces the brief screen history of Great Expectations and presents information which can be helpful in better understanding the ideas behind the screen versions of the novel. The fourth and fifth chapters present the 1998 and 2012 versions of the novel, respectively. They examine the differences between them and the original novel, as well as investigate how the film-makers interpret the literary classic and why.
