The paper “Troubled Relationship in Ian McEwan's Novels; Atonement, On Chesil Beach and The Children Act " analyzes the problems of people in relationships in the works of English writer Ian McEwan. This author presents in an interesting way the difficulties that each of the readers of his novel could encounter in his or her love life.Each chapter of the work is devoted to a different work by Ian McEwan, dealing with the analysis of problems encountered by the characters created by the author in the pursuit of their happiness in intimate and love life. At the end of each chapter there is a summary of the problems encountered by the heroes of the novel.The action of each of the novels analyzed in this work is set in a different decade of the 20th century to show the problems faced by people, which indirectly influenced the later fate of the characters. Atonement presents the problem of various social classes, the unfair accusation that has serious consequences and the effects of war. A taboo topic associated with sexual intercourse, which was not widely discussed in the 1960s, as well as incest and lack of mutual honesty about each other's feelings and fears are the themes of On Chesil Beach. The Children Act, on the other hand, shows the problem of achieving success in a career at the expense of marriage, which begins to fall apart due to a lack of mutual interest and contact.The thesis analyses those events in the lives of the characters which determined the problems they encountered later in their relationships. It also poses questions what could be done to avoid these problems. These couples could have experienced happiness had it not been for the mistakes made by them and some people around them. Socio-historical factors also played a major role in their predicament.

Powieść ta podejmuje także problem kazirodztwa i braku wzajemnej szczerości co do swoich uczuć oraz obaw.
