The use of emoji among digital natives – a questionnaire analysis

The code of emoji has been developing rapidly over the last decade, accompanying and replacing traditional writing. People around the globe started using it in their online communication, private messages and public posts. The first chapter of this thesis explores the history of emoji and analyses the reasons behind its popularity. It describes its functions and rules of use. The second chapter is an analysis of the questionnaire distributed among students of English Philology BA studies at Jagiellonian University in Kraków. The aim of the survey is to analyse and describe the usage of emoji among this particular group of digital natives and to establish if there are any differences between how the code is used by the group when communicating in English and in Polish. The conclusions reveal that in the surveyed group there are strong tendencies and homogeneous preferences when it comes to interpreting and using the code.

Kod emoji rozwijał się bardzo dynamicznie w ciągu ostatniej dekady. Emoji zyskały ogromną popularność na całym świecie i obecnie są używane podczas konwersacji na popularnych platformach społecznościowych, zarówno w prywatnych wiadomościach, jak i w publicznych postach. Pierwszy rozdział pracy przedstawia historię powstania kodu emoji oraz przyczyny popularności emoji. Opisuje również funkcje tego kodu oraz zasady używania go. W drugim rozdziale pracy przedstawiona została analiza ankiety przeprowadzonej na grupie studentów studiów licencjackich na kierunku filologia angielska w Instytucie Filologii Angielskiej na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim w Krakowie. Celem ankiety jest opisanie, w jaki sposób ta grupa cyfrowych tubylców posługuje się kodem, oraz czy istnieją jakieś różnice lub podobieństwa między użyciem emoji w komunikacji po polsku i po angielsku. Materiał opisany w pracy licencjackiej udowadnia, że ankietowana grupa ma jednolite preferencje odnośnie do używania emoji oraz że istnieją bardzo silne tendencje w sposobie interpretacji kodu.
