W czasach, gdy w Republice Południowej Afryki panował apartheid, literatura odgrywała niezwykle istotną rolę w kształtowaniu postrzegania tego systemu politycznego na arenie międzynarodowej. Nadine Gordimer i John Maxwell Coetzee są autorami, którzy zdominowali scenę literacką tego kraju. Zapewnili oni reszcie świata wgląd w codzienność obywateli Republiki Południowej Afryki. Celem tej pracy jest zestawienie wybranych dzieł Johna Maxwella Coetzee’go z nowelami autorstwa Nadine Gordimer w celu wyodrębnienia różnic w stylu pisarskim wskazanych twórców i przeanalizowania sposobów, w jakie przedstawiają oni temat apartheidu. Pierwszy rozdział pracy pokrótce opisuje historię wyżej wspomnianego systemu segregacji rasowej, aby czytelnik był zaznajomiony z poszczególnymi wydarzeniami i konsekwencjami związanymi z wprowadzeniem reżimu. Następnie zaprezentowana jest analiza wybranych dzieł literackich wraz z kontekstem historycznym. During the apartheid era in South Africa, literature played a major role in shaping international perception of this system of racial segregation. Nadine Gordimer and John Maxwell Coetzee are the authors who dominated the literary landscape of the country and provided the rest of the world with an insight into the reality of life under the oppressive regime. The aim of this thesis is to juxtapose selected literary works of John Maxwell Coetzee with chosen novels written by Nadine Gordimer in order to bring out distinct differences in the authors’ writing styles and examine how each of the writers deals with the theme of racial segregation. The first chapter of the thesis provides the reader with a brief description of the apartheid regime in order to ensure that one is acquainted with the history of this political system and realizes its implications. After presenting the historical facts, the text moves on to analysing each of the selected literary works. Each of the analyses is presented along with the historical context of the events described in the literary works. It allows the reader to well understand the background to writing the books. The last chapter offers a comparison between the ways in which the authors discuss the problem of racial segregation in their novels.
