Childhood During the Holocaust in John Boyne's The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and Roberto Benigni's Life is Beautiful

The aim of my thesis is to analyse how childhood during the Second World War is shown in John Boyne's The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and Roberto Benigni's Life is Beautiful. I will discuss the methods used by Boyne and Benigni when dealing with the topic of the Holocaust. It is important to consider this issue as Holocaust literature and films are gaining popularity. The historical as well as the psychological background of the Holocaust and its effects on the victims serve as basis for justifying and explaining the decisions of the author and the director. I focus on the fact that a child is the protagonist of both the novel and the film and demonstrate the results of this approach. In this study I try to prove that such works have a powerful effect on the readers and viewers.

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza tego jak dzieciństwo w czasach drugiej wojny światowej zostało przedstawione w powieści Chłopiec w pasiastej piżamie John'a Boyne'a oraz filmie Życie jest piękne Roberta Benigniego. Omówię metody użyte przez Boyne'a i Benigniego przy przedstawianiu Holokaustu. Rozważenie tego tematu jest istotne, gdyż literatura i filmy na temat Holokaustu stają się coraz bardziej popularne. Zarówno historyczne jak i psychologiczne tło Holokaustu i jego efekty na ofiarach służą za podstawę do uzasadnienia i wytłumaczenia decyzji podjętych przez autora i reżysera. Koncentruję się na tym, że dziecko jest głównym bohaterem powieści i filmu oraz demonstruję rezultaty takiego podejścia. W mojej pracy staram się udowodnić, iż takie dzieła wywierają mocny efekt na czytelnikach i widzach.
