Różnice w Kreacji Głównych Bohaterów Powieści L. M. Montgomery "Anne of Green Gables" w Dwóch Polskich Tłumaczeniach Autorstwa Rozalii Bernsteinowej i Pawła Beręsewicza

This dissertation examines the differences in the creation of the three main characters of L. M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables in two Polish translations: by Rozalia Bernsteinowa and Paweł Beręsewicz. These two translations have been chosen from all the thirteen existing Polish translations of the novel, as they offer interesting material for a comparative analysis: they are the first one and one of the most recent translations in the series, and simultaneously are a hundred years apart. What is more, this specific juxtaposition aptly illustrates how the perception of children’s literature and the strategies for translating it have changed over a century. On the basis of the selected passages from the source text and its both versions, the study demonstrates that the visions that Bernsteinowa and Beręsewicz adopted in portraying Anne Shirley, Marilla Cuthbert and Matthew Cuthbert differ from each other, and often also diverge from the original. This, in turn, affects the Polish readers’ reception and interpretation of the whole story. In the end, the thesis offers an assessment of both translatory approaches by locating them in their respective historical contexts.

Niniejsza praca jest poświęcona różnicom w kreacji trojga głównych bohaterów Anne of Green Gables autorstwa L. M. Montgomery w dwóch polskich przekładach Rozalii Bernsteinowej i Pawła Beręsewicza. Właśnie te dwa tłumaczenia zostały wybrane spośród wszystkich trzynastu tłumaczeń powieści, jako że stanowią one ciekawy materiał do analizy porównawczej: jest to pierwsze i jedno z ostatnich polskich tłumaczeń Anne of Green Gables a różnica pomiędzy ich powstaniem wynosi prawie dokładnie sto lat. Ponadto, zestawienie tych dwóch wersji Ani z Zielonego Wzgórza dobrze ilustruje zmiany strategii tłumaczenia literatury dziecięcej na przestrzeni ostatniego wieku. Przykłady wybranych fragmentów z tekstu źródłowego jak również z obydwu tłumaczeń dowodzą temu, że wyobrażenia Bernsteinowej i Beręsewicza dotyczące kreacji Ani Shirley, Maryli Cuthbert i Mateusza Cuthberta różnią się od siebie, a często odbiegają również od oryginału. To, z kolei, wpływa na odbiór polskich czytelników i interpretację całej historii. W rezultacie niniejsza praca dostarcza analizę obydwu strategii tłumaczeniowych poprzez umiejscowienie ich w odpowiednich kontekstach historycznych.
