Through art to freedom. Songs of The Plastic People of the Universe as a contribution in the fight against the communist system in Czechoslovakia (literary-formal aspects and ideological dimension of the texts)

Celem pracy jest analiza wybranych tekstów zespołu The Plastic People of the Universe, prześledzenie działalności grupy oraz charakterystyka undergroundu w Czechosłowacji. Pierwszy rozdział pracy skupia się na opisaniu historii kultury undergroundowej zarówno w Stanach Zjednoczonych i Wielkiej Brytanii, jak i w Czechosłowacji, z uwzględnieniem podobieństw oraz różnic między nimi. Zrozumienie istoty międzynarodowego undergroundu będzie pomocne przy analizie działalności artystycznej i społecznej zespołu oraz okresu, w jakim tworzyli, a więc głównie lat 70. i 80. XX wieku. Następnie opisana została historia powstania zespołu The Plastic People of the Universe wraz z najważniejszymi momentami w jego działalności. Kolejny rozdział teoretyczny koncentruje się na wyjaśnieniu konceptu krytycznej analizy dyskursu, zgodnie z którą przeanalizowane zostały teksty piosenek – zakłada ona m.in. postrzeganie języka jako odbicia rzeczywistości. Same analizy wybranych utworów skupiają się natomiast na tym, jak odzwierciedlało się w nich społeczne zaangażowanie muzyków, ich walka ze zwalczaniem wiary chrześcijańskiej przez władze komunistyczne i wewnętrzne rozdarcie muzyków. Ostatnia część pracy koncentruje się na opisaniu wniosków płynących z działalności zespołu, jej odbioru w kraju i na świecie oraz charakterystyce samej muzyki – równie ważnej jak teksty piosenek.

The aim of the thesis is to analyse some of the songs of The Plastic People of the Universe, to describe their activity and to characterise underground culture in Czechoslovakia. The first chapter focuses on underground in both the United States, the United Kingdom and Czechoslovakia, including similarities and differences between them. Understanding the essence of international underground culture will be helpful for analysis of artistic and social activity of the band and period, in which they played (especially 1970s and 1980s). Then the thesis tells the story of formation of The Plastic People of the Universe, including the most crucial moments of their activity. The next theoretical chapter explains critical discourse analysis, which was used to analyse the lyrics. This theory defines language as a mirror of reality. The analyses of the chosen texts focus on the aspect of reflecting of social engagement of the musicians, their fight against the persecution of Christian faith by communist authorities and internal conflicts in the minds of the musicians. In the last part of the thesis are formulated conclusions about activity of the band, its international and national reception and the character of its music alone - as much important as the lyrics of the songs.
