Comparative analysis of the Polish and English translation of the Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco

Celem niniejszej pracy było przeprowadzenie analizy porównawczej angielskiego i polskiego przekładu utworu „Il nome della Rosa" Umberta Eco. Praca podzielona jest na dwie części: teoretyczną i analityczną. W części teoretycznej poruszone są takie kwestie jak: historia Translation Studies, zwrot kulturowy w przekładzie, a także problematyka i strategie używane w procesie przekładu. Część analityczna skupia sie na pięciu głównych problemach: tłumaczenie nazw własnych, tłumaczenie fragmentów w języku łacińskim, tłumaczenie terminów archaicznych, tłumaczenie wyrażeń idiomatycznych, a także tłumacznie idiolektów. Ostatnią częścią pracy są wnioski będące wynikiem przeprowadzonej analizy.

The aim of this work was to conduct a comparative analysis of the English and Polish translation of Umbert Eco's "Il nome della Rosa". The work is divided into two parts: theoretical and analytical. The theoretical part covers such issues as: history of Translation Studies, cultural turn in translation, as well as the problems and strategies used in the translation process The analytical part focuses on five main problems: translation of proper names, translation of passages in Latin, translation of archaic terms, translation of idiomatic expressions, as well as translation of idiolects. The last part of the work is the conclusions resulting from the analysis.
