Cultural and sociological differences in anime and their American adaptations

The thesis deals with the subject of social and cultural differences, presented on the examples of American adaptations of Japanese works. The presented features are the characteristics of American film, anime, manga and comics, as well as adaptive techniques and the main differences between American and Japanese society. The latest anime adaptations which are: "Death Note", "Ghost in the Shell" and "Alita: Battle Angel" are used for analysis to highlight why such adaptations are made and what are the main differences between them and their original. This topic is important nowadays, when mass culture increases in globalization and there are clashes between cultures in the works of pop culture. Thanks to the Hollywood trend of adapting Japanese works, it is possible to achieve the effect of combining two cultures and embedding works in different contexts than before, meanwhile rediscovering them. All of the adaptations in this thesis combine elements of American action movies and Japanese values ​​placed in a context suitable for a US audience. The work is based on material from a series of books on the history of cinema, articles, encyclopedia, books on Japanese animations by Krzysztof Loska, and historical and cultural sources.

W pracy została poruszona tematyka różnic społecznych i kulturowych, prezentowana na przykładach amerykańskich adaptacji dzieł japońskich. Przedstawione zostały charakterystyki filmu amerykańskiego, anime, mangi i komiksu, a także technik adaptacyjnych oraz podstawowych różnic między społeczeństwem Ameryki i Japonii. Do analizy użyto przykładów stosunkowo najnowszych przełożeń anime: "Death Note", "Ghost in the Shell" i "Alita: Battle Angel", by naświetlić czemu powstają takie adaptacje i jakie są główne różnice między nimi a ich pierwowzorami i z czego wynikają. Ten temat jest ważny zwłaszcza współcześnie, gdy kultura masowa podlega globalizacji i następuje zderzenie kultur w dziełach popkultury. Dzięki hollywoodzkiemu trendowi adaptowania japońskich dzieł można zaobserwować zjawisko połączenia dwóch kultur oraz osadzania utworów w innych kontekstach niż dotychczas, odkrywając je na nowo. Wszystkie adaptacje poddane analizie w pracy łączą w sobie elementy amerykańskiego kina akcji oraz japońskich wartości umieszczonych w odpowiednim kontekście dla odbiorców ze Stanów Zjednoczonych. Praca posiłkuje się materiałem z serii książek o historii kina, artykułów, encyklopedii internetowych, książek na temat japońskich animacji Krzysztofa Loski oraz zagranicznych źródeł historycznych i kulturowych.
