The image of femininity and masculinity in the fairy tales over the centuries

Niniejsza praca magisterska poświęcona jest analizie reprezentacji kobiecości i męskości w baśniach dla dzieci na przestrzeni wieków. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiam krótką historię baśni, naukowe teorie dotyczące tego gatunku oraz poruszam temat wpływu, jaki baśnie mają na dzieci i na konstrukcję ich osobowości. W rozdziale tym wprowadzam również pojęcie płci społecznej, stereotypów płci i ról płciowych. W drugim i trzecim rozdziale przeprowadzam analizę trzech wersji dwóch słynnych baśni: Czerwonego Kapturka i Śpiącej Królewny. Autorem pierwszej analizowanej wersji każdej z baśni jest Charles Perrault, drugiej bracia Grimm, trzeciej zaś współcześni francuscy pisarze Philippe Dumas, Boris Moissard i Geoffroy de Pennart. W ostatnim rozdziale przedstawiam wnioski wyciągnięte z analizy wspomnianych baśni oraz zastanawiam się, czy obraz kobiet i mężczyzn, który się z niej wyłania, powiela stereotypy płciowe i porządek patriarchalny.

This Master's thesis is dedicated to the analysis of representations of femininity and masculinity in children's fairy tales over the centuries. In the first chapter, I present a brief history of fairy tales, some theoretical approaches to this genre and I explain what influence fairy tales have on children and on their self-construction. Afterwards, I introduce the notion of gender, gender stereotypes and gender roles. In the second and the third chapters, I analyze three versions of two famous fairy tales: Little Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty. The author of the first version of both fairy tales is Perrault, of the seconde the Grimm Brothers and the third version was written by modern French authors Philippe Dumas, Boris Moissard and Geoffroy de Pennart. In the last chapter, I present the conclusions drawn from the analysis of the fairy tales and I wonder if the image of women and men that emerges from this analysis reproduces gender stereotypes and the patriarchal order.

Ce mémoire de maîtrise est consacré à l’analyse des représentations de la féminité et de la masculinité dans les contes pour enfants à travers les siècles. Dans le premier chapitre, je présente une brève histoire du conte, quelques approches théoriques de ce genre et je parle de l’influence que les contes exercent sur les enfants et sur leur construction de soi. J’y introduis également la notion de genre, de stéréotype de genre et de rôles sexuels. Dans le deuxième et dans le troisième chapitre, je procède à l’analyse des trois versions de deux contes célèbres : Le Petit Chaperon rouge et La Belle au bois dormant, la première version étant celle de Perrault, la deuxième celle des frères Grimm et la troisième constituant une réécriture moderne française de Philippe Dumas, Boris Moissard et Geoffroy de Pennart. Dans le dernier chapitre, je présente les conclusions tirées de l’analyse des contes et je me demande si l’image des femmes et des hommes ressortie de cette analyse reproduit les stéréotypes de genre et l’ordre patriarcal.
