The Body and The Otherness: Anthropological Analysis of the Image of Pig in Contemporary Culture

Praca stanowi analizę sposobów przedstawienia świni i mięsa w kontekście cielesności w różnych obszarach współczesnej kultury europejskiej i amerykańskiej. W duchu etnografii wielostanowiskowej zaproponowanej przez George'a Marcusa, autorka bada znaczenia nadawane temu zwierzęciu w tekstach literackich i filmowych, w kulturze popularnej, w mowie potocznej, w prawodawstwie, a także w zebranym materiale netnograficznym, takim jak komentarze, memy czy treści zawarte na stronach internetowych firm zajmujących się przemysłową hodowlą świń i produkcją mięsa. Wychodząc od klasycznych teorii antropologicznych i filozoficznych, takich jak opozycje swój - obcy i kultura - natura czy teoria biowładzy Michela Foucault, autorka aplikuje je do relacji człowiek - zwierzę osadzonych w nowoczesnych realiach kultury masowej i hodowli przemysłowej. Motywem przewodnim prowadzonych analiz jest ciało i uwikłanie symboliki świni w konteksty płci i seksualności. Rozważania usytuowane są na szerszym tle, jakim jest miejsce badań międzygatunkowych w antropologii, podmiotowość zwierząt w kulturze wspołczesnej, feministyczne teorie ciała czy symbolika krwi i zabijania zwierząt w kulturze judeochrześcijańskiej. Autorka zarysowuje szczegółowe znaczenia i wzajemne powiązania pomiędzy symboliką świni, nadawanymi jej znaczeniami seksualnymi, znaczeniem konsumpcji mięsa oraz statusem i obrazem świni w kulturze ludowej i współczesnej.

The work analyzes the ways of presenting pig and pigmeat in the context of body in various areas of contemporary European and American culture. According to the conception of multi-sited ethnography proposed by George Marcus, the author examines the meanings assigned to the pig in literature and cinema, in popular culture, in colloquial speech, in legislation, as well as in the presented netnographic materials, such as comments, memes or content of websites of industrial farming or meat production companies. Using classical anthropological and philosophical theories, such as self-other and culture-nature opposition, or Michel Foucault's theory of biopolitics, the author applies them to the human-animal relationship set in the modern reality of mass culture and industrial breeding. The leitmotif of the analyzes is the body and the entanglement of the pig symbol in the contexts of gender and sexuality. The considerations are set in a broader background, such as the status of interspecies research in anthropology, the subjectivity of animals in contemporary culture, feminist theories of the body or the symbolism of blood and animal killing in Judeo-Christian culture. The author outlines the meanings and interrelationships between the symbolism of the pig, the sexual meanings given to it, the meaning of meat consumption, and the status and image of the pig in folk and contemporary European culture.
