Ekfraza zatrzymanej akcji w "Historii Etiopskiej" Heliodora z Emesy

In ancient Greek novels ekphrasis (ancient description of a work of art) is often the starting point of the story. Heliodoros of Emesa begins his tha Aethiopica by describing a waterside battlefield through the robbers' eyes. This description resembles a paused scene in a film or theatrical performance, where one can easily recognize two plans: the silent ship with the victims scattered around and a miraculously surviving girl with her dying lover. Heliodoros builds the initial description, as if the thieves had before them a real painting. In 1626 Abraham Bloemaert aptly illustrated Heliodoros' literary suggestion thus initiating discussions on the knowledge and the intention of the author.
