Where will "The address" lead us this time? : on the hermeneutical labyrinths Sohrāb Sepehri’s poem tempts us to enter
The ambiguous poem "The Address" (Nešāni) by the modern Persian mystical poet, Sohrāb Sepehri (1928-1980) is open to multiple readings, both formalist and those mediated in other texts, particularly in Abrahamic and Far Eastern traditions. Hence, it may be a trap to otherwise proficient interpreters, well-versed in Persian classical literature and convinced that they possess the exclusive passkey to its semantic disclosure. Before presenting her own attempt at following the poem’s telos, the author of the present article first introduces Sepehri’s ‘unorthodox’ mysticism and comments on two of its previous interpretations.
