Scientific theories of politics and postmodernism

Autorka zwraca uwagę na utrzymujące się - także współcześnie - kontrowersje związane z terminem "nauka", zwłaszcza gdy jest on stosowany w odniesieniu do metod, wiedzy i wartości poznawczych teorii formułowanych w dyscyplinach społecznych. Postmodernizm tworzy dla tej dyskusji nową perspektywę, w której naukowość dyscyplin społecznych i wartość epistemologiczna ich teorii, jest roztrząsana od nowa, nadal jednak nie przynosząc - podobnie jak spory wcześniejsze - zadawalającego rozwiązania. W konsekwencji pozostaje niepewność i wielość możliwych perspektyw ujmowania świata, z których każda coś swoistego ujawnia i zarazem coś ukrywa w rzeczywistości społecznej. To sprawia , że - bez względu na źródło inspiracji - badania podporządkowane rygorom metody naukowej w sensie oświeceniowym nadal zachowują swoją wartość.

The author draws our attention to the continuing controversy relating to the use of the term "science" particularly when it is applied (with reference) to the methods, the knowledge and the cognitive values of theories formulated in the social disciplines. Postmodernism creates a new perspective for the discussion. From this perspective the scientific nature of social disciplines and the epistemological value of their theories is again discussed at length. However, as during previous disputes, no satisfactory solution was found. In consequence, uncertainty remains as well as many possible perspectives the world can be viewed from. Each of those (perspectives) reveals something characteristic while, at the same time, concealing some other point as far as the social reality is concerned. This is the reason why, regardless of the source of inspiration, research subjected to the rigours of scientific method in the Enlightenment sense of the word remains valid till this day.
