"Homecoming" metaphor in the narrations of Polish Traditional Wiccans
Since 1979, when Margot Adler in Drawing Down the Moon described contemporary Pagans as "oming home" rather than "converting" to Paganism, the notion of "homecoming" has been discussed thoroughly by scholars and Pagans themselves. Some have argued against it, seeing it for example as a form of theological postulate and a metaphor concerning not only contemporary Pagans, but also adherents of other religions. The following article examines "homecoming" in the narrations of Polish Traditional Wiccans. Basing on semi-structured interviews, the authoress explores whether the metaphor applies to the experiences of the respondents and if so, what this "home" might be. Most of them heard of "coming home", proving it to be a popular theme, but more significantly, most of them (25 out of 31) was also keen to accept it as a metaphor corresponding to their own experience. The home, however, was differently described, mainly as the spiritual community of witches. This proves that the metaphor continues to influence the converts’ narrations, also in the case of Polish Wiccans.
