Birds in the culture and language of Upper Sorbs

Birds are an important element of nature found in the Upper Sorbian culture. This can be seen above all in Upper Sorbian literature, painting and music. This is also confirmed in the language, especially in Upper Sorbian proverbs and idioms containing the "bird" component. Moreover, one of the most vital customs is birds‘ wedding (in Upper Sorbian ptači kwas) – an annual habit celebrated on 25th January.

Ptaki są ważnym elementem przyrody występującym w kulturze Górnołużyczan. Widać to przede wszystkim w górnołużyckiej literaturze, malarstwie oraz muzyce. Znajduje to również potwierdzenie w języku, szczególnie zaś w górnołużyckich przysłowiach i frazeologizmach zawierających „ptasi” komponent. Ponadto jednym z najbardziej żywotnych obyczajów jest ptasie wesele (głuż. ptači kwas) – doroczny zwyczaj obchodzony 25 stycznia.
