Is five wives not enough? About polygamy among Mormons.

The purpose of this paper was to present the phenomenon of polegamy practised by the fundamentalist factions of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Due to the complexity of this subject, the first chapter focuses on the events that led to the founding of the chuch, as well as describes its organization and doctrines that fordem the basis for the later introduced polegamy. The second chapter of the work presents the controversial phenomeon practiced by members of the chuch and the events that led to the publication of the Manifesto of 1890, chich resulted in banning. Then the slow formation of fundamentalist factions is described, with particular emphasis on the lar gest in terms of the number of members and those that play a key role today. The most attention was paid to the community that once live in Short Creek on the border of Utah and Arizona. Their everyday life was presented, the problems they struggled with and the related controversies such as, multiple marriages with underage girls or the genetic problems that they still have to face.

Celem niniejszej pracy było przedstawienie zjawiska poligamii praktykowanej przez fundamentalistyczne odłamy Kościoła Jezusa Chrystusa Świętych w Dniach Ostatnich. Ze względu na złożoność tej tematyki w pierwszym rozdziale skupiono się na przedstawieniu wydarzeń, które doprowadziły do założenia Kościoła, opisano jego organizację jak i doktryny, które stanowiły podwaliny do wprowadzonej później poligamii. Drugi rozdział pracy przedstawia kontrowersyjne zjawisko aktywnie praktykowane przez członków wspólnoty oraz wydarzenia, które doprowadziły do ogłoszenia Manifestu z 1890 roku, oficjalnie go zakazującego. Następnie opisane jest powolne kształtowanie się odłamów fundamentalistycznych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem największych pod względem liczby członków oraz tych, które współcześnie odgrywają kluczową rolę. Najwięcej uwagi poświęcono społeczności niegdyś zamieszkującej tereny Short Creek na pograniczu stanu Utah oraz Arizona. Przedstawiono ich codzienne życie, problemy z którymi się borykali oraz wiążące się z tym kontrowersje jak np. mnogie małżeństwa z nieletnimi dziewczętami czy też wynikające z tego problemy genetyczne.
