Tongues od fire : fire in children's and young adults' literature

Użyte w tytule metaforyczne określenie „języki ognia” otwiera na perspektywę hermeneutyczną i służy podkreśleniu wielowykładalności omawianego motywu. Artykuł stanowi próbę odpowiedzi na pytania o to, jakie zagadnienia i tematy wprowadzane są do literatury dla małego czytelnika, gdy pojawia się w niej wydarzenie pożaru. Analiza scen pożarów w utworach z różnych epok pokazała, że oddziałując na wyobraźnię oraz emocje odbiorców, obrazy te wyprowadzają dziecko ze sfery bezpieczeństwa, konfrontują z sytuacją graniczną, ze zniszczeniem i śmiercią. Co więcej, wydobywając grozę wydarzenia i egzystencjalną bezradność człowieka, ujawniają moralne wybory, niosą pedagogiczny przekaz, a niekiedy zachwyt nad pięknem zjawiska. Prześledzenie motywu pożaru w wielu tekstach pokazało, że uruchamia on różne dyskursy: egzystencjalny, etyczny, dydaktyczny, antropologiczny czy estetyczny, otwiera na pytania o wartości i ich hierarchię. A ponadto - że zmienia się, zwłaszcza w przekazie dydaktycznym, jego funkcja.

The metaphorical expression used in the title, the "tongues of fire", opens a hermeneutic perspective and is meant to emphasize the multi-explicability of the discussed motif. The article attempts to answer the questions what issues and subjects are introduced into literature for young readers, when an event of fire is addressed. The analysis of fire scenes in literary works from various epochs has shown that by influencing the imagination and emotions of the audience, these images take children out of their comfort zone, and confront them with a borderline situation, with destruction and death. What is more, by exposing the horror of the event and the existential helplessness of humans in the face of it, they reveal moral choices, carry a pedagogical message, and sometimes also fascination with the beauty of the phenomenon. Tracing the motif of fire in numerous texts has proved that it triggers off different kinds of discourse - existential, ethical, didactic, anthropological or aesthetic one, and poses questions about values and their hierarchy. Moreover, its function changes, especially in the didactic message.
