Discussing the phase of Jespersen’s Cycle in the East Central German text of the "Acts of the Apostles" from the 14th century

The paper presents a language analysis of the East Central German text of the Acts of the Apostles from the 14th century in the context of grammaticalization. Taking the dialectal features into consideration, Middle High German verbal negation is shown as a cycle. The research proves the presence of the polynegation ne … niht or rather ne + other negator, which should be treated as one of several possibilities of verbal negation at that time. Also shown is the trace existence of the old and redundant negator ne (+ verb) and the consequent increasing frequency of the negation niht. The analysis takes the position of the verb in main clauses as well as in subordinate clauses, and the results of the research are always shown with appropriate examples.

In dieser korpuslinguistisch basierten Studie wird die sprachliche Analyse des ostmitteldeutschen Textes der Apostelgeschichte aus dem 14. Jh. durchgeführt. Im Kontext der Grammatikalisierung wird versucht, die Entwicklung der deutschen Verbnegation als Zyklus darzustellen, wobei auch die dialektbedingten Eigentümlichkeiten einbezogen werden. Die Erforschung des Korpus weist eindeutig die Existenz der Mehrfachnegation ne … niht bzw. ne + ein anderer Negator nach, die als eine der nebeneinander bestehenden Verbnegationsmöglichkeiten in der mhd. Zeit fungierte. Gle ichzeitig werden einerseits die Existenz des immer redundanter werdenden und somit untergehen den alten Negators ne (+ Verb), andererseits die steigende Frequenz des Gebrauchs des sich kon sequent durchsetzenden Negationswortes niht bewiesen. Die Analyse berücksichtigt zusätzlich die Stellung des Verbs sowohl in den Haupt- als auch Nebensätzen. Die anhand der Untersuchung gezogenen Schlüsse werden mithilfe der entsprechenden Belege untermauert.
