Translating Conversational and Magical language in "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina": A Comparative Analysis of the Polish dubbing and subtitles.

The aim of this thesis is to analyse conversational and magical language of the show Chilling Adventures of Sabrina in translation. Chapter one contains theory concerning the functions of dialogues in audiovisual media, the notion of prefabricated orality and magical function of language in general. Characteristics of natural conversation in both English and Polish are also presented in this chapter. In the second chapter I explore the mechanics and constraints of two methods of AVT in interest here, namely dubbing and subtitling. Chapter three starts with a brief introduction of the show Chilling Adventures of Sabrina itself and is followed by an analysis. My investigation into the language of the show is divided into three sections, each devoted to a different aspect. The first section analyses conversational language, the second one the use of exclamations and expletives as a characteristic of both conversational and magical language and the third one is devoted to language of witchcraft. The thesis ends with a summary of findings and a conclusion concerning the effectiveness of both types of AVT in this context.

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza języka konwersacji i języka magii w serialu Chilling Adventures of Sabrina w tłumaczeniu. Pierwszy rozdział przedstawia ujęcia teoretyczne dotyczące funkcji dialogów w mediach audiowizualnych, kreowanej przez scenarzystów iluzji potoczności (prefabricated orality) oraz magicznej funkcji języka. Rozdział zawiera również opis cech charakterystycznych języka konwersacji w języku angielskim i polskim. W drugim rozdziale zgłębiam mechanizmy i ograniczenia związane z dwiema metodami tłumaczenia audiowizualnego, tj. dubbingiem i napisami. Rozdział trzeci otwiera krótkie wprowadzenie do samego serialu Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, po czym następuje analiza właściwa. Moje rozważania podzielone są na trzy sekcje, każda poświęcona innemu aspektowi. W pierwszej analizuję język konwersacji, w drugiej użycie wykrzyknień i przekleństw jako cechy charakterystycznej zarówno języka konwersacji jak i magii, a ostatnia sekcja poświęcona jest językowi dotyczącemu czarownictwa. Praca zakończona jest podsumowaniem mojej analizy a także wnioskami na temat efektywności obu metod tłumaczenia audiowizualnego w tym kontekście.
