“At the Mouth of the Tunnel”: Representation of the Evil Child in William Golding’s Darkness Visible

This thesis investigates the concept of evil in the novel Darkness Visible. In my work I centre on the figure of Sophy Stanhope, the main protagonist of the second part of the work. In an attempt to give possible explanations for her transgression, I analyse her family environment and interaction with the outside world. I pay particular attention to Sophy’s relationships with other people, following her moral development and the advancing change she undergoes. I endeavour to prove that Sophy’s behaviour is not a matter of inborn evil nature but results from environmental factors, the main of which is her upbringing in a dysfunctional family. I put under close scrutiny the elements of the novel’s world which indicate this correlation. One of the most vivid symbols of evil in the novel and simultaneously a crucial point of the character’s design is the metaphor of the tunnel which I also try to explain.

Niniejsza praca bada koncepcję zła w powieści Widzialna ciemność. Koncentruję się w niej na postaci Sophy Stanhope, głównej bohaterce drugiej części utworu. Próbując znaleźć możliwe wyjaśnienia dla jej transgresji, analizuję jej środowisko rodzinne i interakcje ze światem zewnętrznym. Zwracam szczególną uwagę na relacje Sophy z innymi ludźmi, śledząc jej rozwój moralny i postępującą zmianę, jakiej ulega. Staram się udowodnić, że zachowanie Sophy nie jest kwestią wrodzonej złej natury, lecz wynika z czynników środowiskowych, z których głównym jest wychowanie w dysfunkcyjnej rodzinie. Szczegółowemu badaniu poddaję elementy powieściowego świata, które wskazują na tę zależność. Jednym z najbardziej wyrazistych symboli zła w powieści i jednocześnie kluczowym punktem konstrukcji postaci jest metafora tunelu, którą również staram się wyjaśnić.
