This thesis examines how gender roles are represented in four Tennessee Williams’ plays. It is argued that Maggie and Brick of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Blanche of A Streetcar Named Desire, Val, Lady and Carol of Orpheus Descending, as well as Catherine and Sebastian of Suddenly Last Summer, subvert traditional gender roles and challenge the notions of masculinity and femininity. The first chapter defines the concepts of gender and gender roles and provides a historical background to gender roles in 1950s America. The second chapter delves into the relationship between Maggie and Brick — how they are performing and subverting their respective gender roles independently as well as in relation to each other. Maggie exhibits many typically masculine traits like independence, ambition and sexual dominance. Brick, on the other hand, is submissive, emotional, and depends on his family for financial support. The third chapter is concerned with Blanche, the heroine of A Streetcar Named Desire. She blends both feminine and masculine traits and uses her uber feminine gender performance as means to achieve financial stability. Chapter IV explores how Val, Lady and Carol deconstruct their respective gender roles and the price that both Val and Lady have to pay for violating the patriarchal social order. The last chapter is concerned with Catherine and Sebastian. Both of them challenge the notion of strict binary gender roles by exhibiting both masculine and feminine traits. Catherine is naïve and loving, but at times also violent and rebellious, while Sebastian is a gay men, who is dependent on his mother, but at the same time exhibits predatory tendencies.

Celem pracy jest wykazanie, że Maggie i Brick z Kotki na gorącym blaszanym dachu, Blanche, bohaterka Tramwaju zwanego pożądaniem, Val, Lady i Carol z Orfeusza w wężowej skórze oraz Catherine i Sebastian z Nagle, ostatniego lata, podważają stereotypowe, binarne role płciowe. W rozdziale pierwszym omówione zostały definicje płci i ról płciowych, a także nakreślona została sytuacja kobiet i mężczyzn w Ameryce lat 50-tych. Rozdział drugi został poświęcony Maggie i Brickowi, którzy dekonstruują zastane kategorie płciowe. Maggie wykazuje wiele typowo żeńskich cech — jest ambitna, niezależna i dominująca. Brick, z kolei, jest osobą emocjonalną, uległą i wciąż finansowo zależną od rodziny. W rozdziale trzecim przedstawiona została sylwetka Blanche, bohaterki Tramwaju zwanego pożądaniem. Blanche łączy w sobie zarówno żeńskie, jak i męskie cechy osobowościowe. W trosce o poprawę swojej sytuacji materialnej, odgrywa ona kobiecość w szczególnie przejaskrawiony sposób, licząc, że wtedy Mitch się jej oświadczy. Czwarty rozdział, poświęcony został Valentinowi, Lady i Carol. W tym rozdziale szczegółowo omówione zostało to, jak trójka bohaterów dekonstruuje męskie i żeńskie role płciowe. Valentine postrzega tradycyjnie rozumianą męskość jako coś negatywnego. Sprzeciw wobec opresyjnych, patriarchalnych norm społecznych, Val i Lady przypłacają własnym życiem. W ostatnim, piątym rozdziale, nakreślone zostały sylwetki Catherine i Sebastiana. Oboje tych bohaterów posiada zarówno kobiecie, jak i męskie cechy płciowe. Łączą ich też pewne cechy wspólne, jak transgresyjna seksualność.
