The present study investigates the role of Pope John Paul II as a symbol of hope and victory in the collapse of communism in his native Poland. The study focuses primarily on “the heart of Europe”, when Poland was under the hegemony of the Soviet Union. His role and influence become much more apparent as the study traces the steps taken by him as the 264th Bishop of Rome, beginning with his first papal pilgrimage in 1979 until the complete demise of the Kremlin-established dictatorship in the region in 1989. Drawing from both primary sources, mainly oral history interviews, and secondary sources, this analysis measures his contribution to the nonviolent collapse of the regime and the impact of his words on the masses.
