Lost in translation of Claude Lanzmann's Shoh. Landscapes, palimpsests and nods of memotry in the bystanders' testimonies

The paper looks at some of the results of a translation-research project centred around the voices of Polish bystanders in Claude Lanzmann’s Shoah from the perspective of the recent debate on traumatic memory in the Polish humanities. The aim of the project is to produce a full transcript and an English translation of what Lanzmann’s Polish interlocutors actually say as well as providing an interdisciplinary analysis of the ways their testimony was produced and gathered. In the paper the sample research material - three sequences from the scene in front of the village church in Chełmno on Ner) - is placed within the network of categories developed by Ryszard Nycz in order to show how interpretations of the documentary based on the deficient English version (the subtitles) are par force limited if not incorrect. The three micro case-studies refer to the influential interpretation by Shoshana Felman and they point to moments when the knowledge of the original utterance and its context proves vital for its full understanding and drawing of conclusions.
