Involving students with mental health experience in social work education

Promising method of teaching about mental health is to provide interested parties (especially students and social therapists in general) with first-hand knowledge about mental illness. It is therefore essential to have direct contact with individuals with mental illnesses in order to understand them and modify our stereotyped view of deep emotional problems. Article present the history of shaping the concept of service users involvement at the Institute of Sociology of the Jagiellonian University. The authors of the text emphasize that its indisputable strength is the involvement and cooperation of various actors - academic teachers, people with experience of the disease, students, social welfare practitioners and therapists. It is necessary to highlight at this point the particular importance of participation of students with experience of emotional difficulties in the process of education.

Obiecującą metodą nauczania o zdrowiu psychicznym jest dostarczenie zainteresowanym (zwłaszcza studentom i ogólnie terapeutom społecznym) wiedzy z pierwszej ręki na temat chorób psychicznych. Dlatego niezbędny jest bezpośredni kontakt z osobami z chorobami psychicznymi - aby je zrozumieć i zmieniać nasze stereotypowe postrzeganie głębokich problemów emocjonalnych. Artykuł przedstawia historię kształtowania koncepcji włączania użytkowników usług ochrony zdrowia psychicznego w edukację w Instytucie Socjologii UJ. Autorzy tekstu podkreślają, że jej niepodważalną siłą jest zaangażowanie i współpraca różnych aktorów – nauczycieli akademickich, osób z doświadczeniem choroby, studentów, praktyków pomocy społecznej i terapeutów. Należy zwrócić również uwagę na szczególne znaczenie udziału studentów z doświadczeniem trudności emocjonalnych w procesie kształcenia.
