Electoral reforms in Israel
The first four decades after the adoption of general rules of electoral laws in 1949, mainly saw unsuccessful proposals to reform Knesset elections, accompanied by a few minor amendments. The beginning of the 1990s was marked by a substantial change to the electoral system, as a direct election of the prime minister was introduced. The chapter aims to analyze the relevant political actors’ motivations, the course of changes, and the political consequences of the reforms.
