Urban anthropology : East Central Europe

This entry discusses the historical context of urban development in east central Europe before outlining the key issues studied by urban anthropologists in the region. It refers to ethnographic research in particular cities, emphasizing the most significant topics that have been studied by researchers who are academically based both within and outside the region. The entry also covers the most influential theoretical framework, which was adapted as well as generated in the course of these anthropological studies. Studies are included that, in various linguistic and institutional scholarly traditions of east central European countries, are also defined as ethnological, ethnographic, folkloristic, or as related to cultural studies, urban studies, urban sociology, and qualitatively oriented urban history or to human geography and area studies.
