The promises of monsters : reproductive economies of knowledge and affective practices of cognition

Proposed by Timothy Morton, the concept of ecology without nature is the starting point for investigating cognitive practices in the context of the deepening climate crisis. However, as Kathryn Yusoff indicates, from today’s perspective it appears more important to recognize the fundamental difference between the two types of practices: reproductive economies of knowledge and affective practices of cognition (ecologies of ignorance). It is not only the former type that bears the monsters exceeding the accepted norms. The latter is the domain of monsters as well: bodies and subjectivities that emerge from the dynamic game of material, undefined relations, for recognizing and naming which we lack relevant tools. The differences between these two types of monsters are demonstrated by the analysis and interpretations of selected artifacts: the documentary film My Octopus Teacher (2020), the novel by Orson Scott Card Speaker for the Dead (1991), and The Southern Reach Trilogy (2014) by Jeff VanderMeer.

Jak jednak pokazuje Kathryn Yusoff, z dzisiejszej perspektywy ważniejsze okazuje się dostrzeżenie podstawowej różnicy między dwoma typami praktyk: reprodukcyjnymi ekonomiami wiedzy i afektywnymi praktykami poznawczymi (ekologiami nie-wiedzy). Nie tylko te pierwsze rodzą wykraczające poza przyjęte normy potwory. Również te drugie stanowią domenę potworów, tym razem takich ciał i podmiotowości, które powstają w efekcie dynamicznej gry materialnych, nieokreślonych relacji, dla których dostrzeżenia i nazwania brakuje nam stosownych narzędzi.
