Television and cultural norms. Adapting foreign reality shows to Polish reality

Celem pracy jest wyróżnienie tendencji występujących w polskich programach reality show, które wskazują na obecne w państwie normy kulturowe. Poprzez analizę porównawczą formatów, jakimi są: Warsaw Shore: Ekipa z Warszawy, Prince Charming, Magia Nagości oraz ich zagraniczne odpowiedniki, wyodrębnione zostały cechy charakterystyczne dla polskich produkcji. Aby przybliżyć czytelnikowi terminy takie jak format i gatunek telewizyjny oraz reality show, pojęcia te zostały omówione i umieszczone w kontekście polskiej telewizji. Analiza wyróżnionych formatów pozwoliła na wyodrębnienie konkretnych norm kulturowych obecnych w polskim heteronormatywnym społeczeństwie. Skupiono się głównie na sposobie, w jaki zostały przedstawione obowiązujące w Polsce tematy tabu oraz próbie ich przełamania przez twórców analizowanych programów telewizyjnych.

The aim of this research is to illustrate the trends and tendencies existing in polish reality shows, that highly reflect the current cultural norms of the country. Through a comparative analysis of different shows such as Warsaw Shore: Ekipa z Warszawy, Prince Charming, Magia Nagości, and their international equivalents, themes, and aspects unique to Polish reality television have been found. The key terms such as format and genre were examined and analyzed in the context of Polish television, allowing the reader to better understand these terms. Analysis of distinguished formats gave a possibility to distinguish specific cultural standards of Polish heteronormative society. The focus was primarily on how Polish taboo topics were presented in these shows and how TV producers attempted to break them.
