A murderer or a victim? A generic analysis of Lars Kepler’s novel Eldvittnet

Celem tej pracy licencjackiej jest sprawdzenie w jakim stopniu powieść Larsa Keplera Eldvittnet (2011) wpasowuje się w ramy gatunkowe powieści kryminalnej. Podstawą analizy są pojęcia: gatunek literacki, w ujęciu Alastaira Fowlera; powieść kryminalna, w ujęciu m.in. Tzvetana Todorova i Richarda Alewyna; podstawowe kategorie narratologiczne, czyli historia, tekst i narracja, w ujęciu Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan. Przedmiotem analizy jest jedna z kategorii narratologicznych, a mianowicie historia. Praca podzielona jest na dwa rozdziały – teoretyczny i analityczny, a każdy z nich zawiera cztery podrozdziały. Rozdział teoretyczny obejmuje odpowiednio: rys historyczny; prezentację materiału; gatunek literacki; elementy narratologii. Rozdział analityczny omawia kolejno: intrygę; postacie; czas akcji; miejsce akcji. Analiza wykazała, że Eldvittnet posiada cechy charakterystyczne dla powieści kryminalnej, czerpie przede wszystkim z kryminału detektywistycznego i czarnego kryminału, niektóre rozwiązania autora są jednak dla gatunku nietypowe, jak np. brak bliżej określonego czasu akcji. Ponadto przykładem swego rodzaju zabawy z konwencjami gatunkowymi jest sugerowanie występowania w powieści zjawisk pozaziemskich.

The aim of this thesis was to study to what extent does Lars Kepler’s novel Eldvittnet (2011) fit into crime novel genre. The analysis was based on the concepts of the literary genre, as defined by Alastair Fowler; the crime novel, as defined by i.a. Tzvetan Todorov and Richard Alewyn; the basic narratological categories, i.e. story, text and narration, as defined by Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan. The subject of the analysis is one of the narratological categories, namely story. The thesis was divided into two chapters – theoretical and analytical, each of them contains four subchapters. The theoretical chapter includes a historical outline, presentation of the material used, a definition of literary genre and elements of narratology. The analytical chapter discusses the plot, the characters, the time and the setting. The analysis showed that Eldvittnet has distinctive features of a crime novel, especially detective crime story and hardboiled detective novel, some of the author’s solutions, however, are unusual for the genre, such as for example the lack of a specified time. Moreover, an example of playing with genre conventions is suggesting the occurrence of supernatural forces in the novel.
