Rhetorical analysis of non-verbal aspects of communication based on the most popular TEDx speeches

Przepływ informacji, jej nadanie oraz odbiór to podstawowy element każdej ludzkiej działalności. Pozajęzykowe aspekty mogą zdecydowanie ułatwiać, jak i utrudniać komunikację. Przejmowanie zwyczajów i rytualności danej kultury kształtuje się od samego momentu narodzenia się w niej. Konfrontacja pomiędzy dwoma odmiennymi środowiskami bez wcześniejszego i wzajemnego zaznajomienia się z nimi, pomimo najlepszych intencji, może skutkować niezrozumieniem, pogłębieniem się stereotypów czy chociażby urazą drugiej osoby. Pierwszym i najłatwiej dostępnym źródłem wiedzy o drugim człowieku są media. Praca, będąca analizą kulturowych różnic niewerbalnych elementów komunikacji, oparta została na wystąpieniach TEDx, czyli prelekcjach o różnej tematyce, mających miejsce w wielu krajach świata. Różnorodność została rozpatrzona na podstawie podziału Edwarda Halla i Richarda Gestelanda na kultury powściągliwe, ekspresyjne, niskiego i wysokiego kontekstu. Dodatkowo analizę pogłębiono o klasyfikację gestów Davida McNeila, Paula Ekmana i Wallace’a Friesena, w celu pełnego zobrazowania odmienności gestykulacji i zachowań przedstawicieli różnych wspólnot kulturowych.

The flow of information, its sending and reception is a basic element of every human activity. Non-linguistic aspects can both facilitate and hinder communication. The adoption of customs and rituals of a given culture is formed from the very moment of its birth in it. A confrontation between two different communities without prior and mutual acquaintance with them, despite the best intentions, may result in misunderstanding, deepening of stereotypes or even resentment of the other person. The first and most accessible source of knowledge about another person is the media. The work, which is an analysis of cultural differences in non-verbal elements of communication, was based on TEDx speeches, i.e., lectures on various topics, taking place in many countries around the world. Diversity was considered on the basis of the division of Edward Hall and Richard Gesteland into restrained, expressive, low-context and high-context cultures. In addition, the analysis was deepened by the classification of the gestures of David McNeil, Paul Ekman and Wallace Friesen, in order to fully illustrate the different gestures and behavior of representatives of different cultural communities.
