Mission statement of cultural institution - meaning and role in building a modern theatre. Case study

Przedmiotem badania o charakterze jakościowym jest misja instytucji kultury, a dokładniej jej znaczenie i rola w budowaniu współczesnego teatru na przykładzie Teatru im. Juliusza Słowackiego w Krakowie. W pracy, w oparciu o przegląd podstawowych teorii w zakresie zarządzania strategicznego, wywiadu z dyrektorem tej instytucji Krzysztofem Głuchowskim oraz przeglądu danych zastanych, analizowane jest znaczenie misji instytucji w przewodzeniu współczesną instytucji artystyczną. Istotny w pracy jest kontekst pandemii COVID-19 i bieżące problemy, z którymi zmaga się ta instytucja. Wnioski wskazują na to, iż misja tego Teatru, choć niezapisana w sposób formalny, odgrywa ważną rolę w codziennym funkcjonowaniu tej instytucji.

The subject of the research, based on qualitative methodology, is mission statement of cultural institution, precisely its meaning and role in building modern theatre. It is a case study of The Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Krakow. Based on an overview of raised issues’ basic theories, an interview with this Institution’s General and Artistic Director Krzysztof Głuchowski and a review of existing data, the mission statement is analyzed for its meaning in leadership of modern artistic institution. The context of COVID-19 pandemic and Theatre’s current issues are of considerable importance in this analysis. The conclusions indicate that the mission statement, while not found on official record, plays an important part in this Institution’s daily life.
