One step ahead and one step behind. A generic analysis of Steget efter by Henning Mankell

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the extent to which Henning Mankell's novel “Steget efter” implements the crime novel’s genre conventions. The research method is based on the notion of literary genre and narratology. The thesis is divided into two main chapters – theoretical and analytical. The theoretical chapter is divided into subchapters, which present in turn: a historical outline of the development of the crime novel and its characteristics, the research material of the thesis along with elements of criticism, the theory of literary genre based on the theses of Alastair Fowler, and elements of narratology based on the research of Gérard Genette, and Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan. The analytical chapter is dedicated to the genre analysis of the research material based on the theory presented. In the following four subchapters, the basic elements of a story in the narratological sense are examined: plot, characters, time and place of action. The work concludes with a presentation of the final conclusions.

Celem niniejszej pracy licencjackiej jest zbadanie, w jakim stopniu powieść Steget efter Henninga Mankella realizuje konwencje gatunkowe powieści kryminalnej. Metoda badawcza opiera się na pojęciu gatunku literackiego i narratologii. Praca została podzielona na dwa główne rozdziały – teoretyczny i analityczny. Rozdział teoretycznym został podzielony na podrozdziały, w których przedstawione zostały kolejno: rys historyczny rozwoju powieści kryminalnej oraz jej charakterystyka, materiał badawczy pracy wraz z elementami krytyki, teoria gatunku literackiego w oparciu o tezy Alastaira Fowlera, a także elementy narratologii w oparciu o badania Gérarda Genette’a, oraz Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan. Kolejny rozdział poświęcony został analizie gatunkowej materiału badawczego na podstawie przedstawionej teorii. W czterech kolejnych podrozdziałach zostały w nim przebadane podstawowe elementy historii w rozumieniu narratologicznym: intryga, postacie, czas i miejsce akcji. Pracę zamyka podsumowanie, zawierające prezentację wniosków końcowych.
