The following paper discusses the influence of present-day technologies on cognitive abilities, considering both positive and negative sides. The discussion focuses mainly on today's high-availability multifunctional technologies, such as laptops and mobile or portable devices. Considering the negative effects of enhancing one's cognitive abilities, the paper raises the topics of digital amnesia, difficulties with focusing attention, and problems related to the credibility of the information source.Furthermore, the paper presents broad cognitive theories, concerning the mind and the environment border problem. The article discusses the theories of Embodied Cognition, Embedded Cognition, and Extended Cognition. Each of them brings a slightly different aspect of the relationship between the mind and the environment, which helps to understand the essence of the influence of modern technologies on cognitive abilities.
