The conception of fear in three fantastic stories by Guy de Maupassant: Fear, On the Water, The Inn.

W mojej pracy licencjackiej analizuję sposób przedstawiania strachu w trzech opowiadaniach Guy de Maupassanta: Strach, Na wodzie i Oberża. Po krótkim omówieniu historii gatunku fantastycznego we Francji, poruszam problem choroby psychicznej Maupassanta, która wywarła wpływ na jego twórczość. Pierwszy rozdział pracy poświęcony jest maupassantowskiej koncepcji „prawdziwego strachu”, która przedstawiona jest w wybranych opowiadaniach. Przyglądam się źródłom tej emocji, często mylonej z niepokojem, jak również reakcjom postaci, które ją odczuwają. W drugim rozdziale pracy omawiam rolę natury w tworzeniu atmosfery lęku. Analizuję mistyczne i symboliczne znaczenie miejsc, w których toczy się akcja opowiadań, jak również środki stylistyczne, którymi posługuje się autor, by je opisać. Badam także wpływ złudzeń optycznych i dźwiękowych na ludzkie zmysły i postrzeganie świata.

Dans mon mémoire de licence j’analyse la représentation de la peur dans trois « contes d’angoisse » de Guy de Maupassant : La Peur, Sur l’eau et L’Auberge. Après un bref aperçu de l’histoire du genre fantastique en France, j’aborde le problème de la maladie mentale de Maupassant qui a influencé son œuvre. Ensuite, le premier chapitre est consacré à la conception maupassantienne de la « vraie peur », telle qu’elle se présente dans les contes choisis. Je me penche sur les sources de cette émotion souvent confondue avec l’anxiété, ainsi que sur les réactions des personnages qui l’éprouvent. Dans le second chapitre j’aborde le rôle de la nature dans la création de l’ambiance d’angoisse. J’analyse la signification mystique et symbolique des environnements dans lesquels se déroule l’action des nouvelles, ainsi que les moyens stylistiques dont l’auteur se sert afin de les décrire. J’examine aussi l’influence des illusions optiques et sonores sur les sens humains et sur la perception du monde.

In my bachelor’s thesis I analyse the representation of fear in three of Guy de Maupassant's "contes d’angoisse" : Fear, On the water and The Inn. After a brief overview of the history of the fantasy genre in France, I discuss the problem of Maupassant's mental illness which influenced his work. Then, the first chapter is devoted to Maupassant's conception of 'real fear' as it appears in the selected tales. I look at the sources of this emotion, which is often confused with anxiety, as well as at the reactions of the characters who experience it. In the second chapter I discuss the role of nature in creating the atmosphere of dread. I analyse the mystical and symbolic significance of the environments in which the action of the short stories takes place, as well as the stylistic means the author uses to describe them. I also examine the influence of optical and auditory illusions on the human senses and on the perception of the world.
