Formula 1 in documentary forms based on "Formula 1: Drive to Survive" documentary series

This study compares one season of Netflix documentary series "Formula 1: Drive to Survive" with three feature-length documentary films about Formula 1 - "Senna", "Schumacher" and "Weekend of a Champion". The aim of the study is to state whether "Formula 1: Drive to Survive", regarding the genre differences, can portray the taken up theme more broadly than traditional documentary films. The text describes history of documentary film, theoritical takes on its categorization and a problem of objectivism in documentary. It also raises the matter of streaming platforms and VoD services as neotelevision, their history (including Netflix), changes they made and perspectives they create in the context of television landscape. This thesis picks up the topic of documentary in television - its history, "reality tv" genre, documentary series (docusoap, docudrama), which derived from this genre, and sports documentary, which is growing in this medium. Based on the categories used in the study, such as themes, characters, their goals and conflicts, locations and time-frames captured in a work, it has been concluded that the genre specifics of documentary series deriving from "reality tv" reflect the nature of sport in a broader manner than documentary film.

Niniejsza praca porównuje jeden sezon serialu dokumentalnego Netfliksa "Formuła 1: Jazda o Życie" z trzema pełnometrażowymi filmami dokumentalnymi o tematyce Formuły 1 - "Senną", "Schumacherem" i "Weekendem z Mistrzem". Celem pracy jest określenie, czy "Formuła 1: Jazda o Życie", z powodu różnic gatunkowych, potrafi obszerniej ująć podejmowaną tematykę niż tradycyjne filmy dokumentalne o Formule 1. Praca opisuje historię filmu dokumentalnego oraz teoretyczne ujęcia dotyczące jego kategoryzacji i kwestii obiektywizmu w dziele dokumentalnym. Następnie porusza kwestię platform streamingowych i serwisów VoD jako neotelewizji, ich historii (w tym Netfliksa), zmian, które dokonały i perspektyw, które tworzą w kontekście krajobrazu telewizyjnego. Ostatnia kwestia obejmuje dokument w telewizji - jego historię, megagatunek "reality tv", w którym zawiera się serial dokumentalny (telenowela dokumentalna, dokudrama) oraz dokument sportowy rozwijający się w tym medium.
