Translation of proper names in the Polish translation of Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. A comparative analysis of the translation by Rozalia Bernsteinowa and Agnieszka Kuc

Niniejsza praca magisterska obejmuje analizę porównawczą nazw własnych w dwóch polskich przekładach powieści Anne of Green Gables oraz ich ogólną charakterystykę, kontekst kulturowy, temat literatury dla dzieci i młodzieży, oraz nieprzekładalności, jak i również strategie i techniki wykorzystywane w tłumaczeniach nazw własnych. Podczas części praktycznej autorka poddała analizie antroponimy, toponimy, fitonimy oraz ideonimy. Autorka zdecydowała się na analizę wyłącznie nazw własnych, ponieważ są one najbardziej problematyczne w procesie tłumaczenia.Tezą niniejszej pracy był wpływ różnicy czasu oraz wyborów translatorskich na jakość obu tłumaczeń. Analiza udowodniła, że brak odpowiedniego przygotowania oraz przyjętych wcześniej strategii spowodowały liczne różnice oraz przekłamania. Autorka uważa, że owa praca może być podstawą do rozszerzenia badań w celu porównania obu tłumaczeń w kontekście całej powieści.

This master thesis includes a comparative analysis of proper names in two Polish translations of the novel Anne of Green Gables, their general characteristics, cultural context, literature for children and young adult, untranslatability and strategies and techniques used for translating proper names. In practical part, the author analyzed anthroponyms, toponyms, phytonyms, ideonyms. The author decided to analyze proper names only, as they are the main translation challenges. The thesis of this study was the influence of time difference and translation choices on the quality of both translations. The analysis showed that lack of preparation and previously adopted strategies caused numerous differences and misrepresentations. The author believes that this master thesis could be the basis for expanding the research to compare the two translations regarding the whole novel.
