The escape from boredom in „A King Alone” by Jean Giono (1947)

The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is the analysis of the theme of boredom in “A King Alone” by Jean Giono. The first chapter relates to the boredom and the diversion on the basis of Pascal’s philosophy. In second chapter, focusing on the relationship between boredom and winter, I analyze the different reasons of the appearance of boredom in the world created by Giono. The last chapter is devoted to the central character of the novel, Captain Langlois. I present him as an example of a men afflicted with existential boredom. I focus in particular on the changes in his behavior, his attempts to find sufficient diversion, and the repercussions of boredom.

Celem niniejszej pracy licencjackiej jest analiza motywu nudy w powieści Jeana Giono „Król się nudzi”. Pierwszy rozdział dotyczy nudy i rozrywki w ujęciu pascalowskim. W drugim rozdziale, skupiając się na związku pomiędzy nudą a zimą, analizuję poszczególne powody pojawienia się nudy w świecie wykreowanym przez Giono. Ostatni rozdział jest poświęcony centralnej postaci powieści, kapitanowi Langlois. Przedstawiam go jako człowieka dotkniętego nudą egzystencjalną. W szczególności skupiam się na zmianach w jego zachowaniu, próbach odnalezienia odpowiedniej rozrywki oraz reperkusjach nudy.

L’objectif de ce mémoire de licence est l’analyse du thème de l’ennui dans le roman « Un roi sans divertissement » de Jean Giono. Le premier chapitre porte sur l’ennui et le divertissement au sens pascalien. Dans le deuxième chapitre, en me concentrant sur la relation entre l'ennui et l'hiver, j’analyse les différentes raisons de l'apparition de l'ennui dans le monde créé par Giono. Le dernier chapitre est consacré au personnage central du roman, capitaine Langlois. Je le présente comme un homme affligé d'un ennui existentiel. Je me concentre en particulier sur les changements de son comportement, ses tentatives de trouver un divertissement suffisant, et les répercussions de l'ennui.
