Trade, crafts and religion in the street names of downtown Paris and Krakow

Niniejsza praca magisterska poświęcona jest analizie i następnie porównaniu pochodzenia wybranych nazw ulic V i I dzielnicy Paryża oraz centrum Krakowa. Ulice zostały wybrane na podstawie ich związku z handlem, rzemiosłem lub aspektami religijnymi. Praca składa się z dwóch części: teoretycznej i praktycznej. W pierwszej części przedstawiono pochodzenie nazw obu miast, a także rozwój ośrodka miejskiego, w tym najważniejszych uczelni obu miast, odpowiednio Sorbony i Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego. Następnie przedstawiono rozwój religii chrześcijańskiej w Paryżu i Krakowie oraz rozwój przemysłu i rzemiosła, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem wspólnot zawodowych zwanych ,,cechami’’. Część praktyczna wyjaśnia dokładne pochodzenie wybranych odonimów, ich zmiany oraz kilka ciekawostek z historii ulic. Wnioski przedstawiają końcowe spostrzeżenia i zachęcają czytelników do dalszej refleksji nad toponimią miejską.

Le présent mémoire de maîtrise est consacré à l’analyse et ensuite à la comparaison de l’origine des noms de rues choisies dans le Ve et le Ier arrondissement de Paris et dans le centre-ville de Cracovie. Les rues ont été sélectionnées en fonction de leur lien avec le commerce et l’artisanat ou avec des aspects religieux. Le mémoire est composé de deux parties : théorique et pratique. La première partie présente les origines et la provenance des noms des deux villes, puis le développement du centre-ville, y compris des universités les plus importantes des deux villes, respectivement la Sorbonne et l’Université Jagellonne. Le développement de la religion chrétienne à Paris et à Cracovie est ensuite présenté, ainsi que le développement de l’industrie et de l’artisanat, en mettant l’accent sur les communautés professionnelles appelées « guildes ». La partie pratique explique l’origine exacte des odonymes choisis, leurs changements et quelques faits intéressants concernant l’histoire des rues. Les conclusions présentent les observations finales et encouragent les lecteurs à réfléchir davantage sur la toponymie urbaine.

This thesis presents the analysis and subsequent comparison of the origin of selected street names in the fifth and first districts of Paris and in the city centre of Krakow. The streets were selected on the basis of their connection with trade and crafts or with religious aspects. The dissertation consists of two parts: theoretical and practical. The first part presents the origins and provenance of the names of the two cities, and then the development of the city centre, including the most important universities of the two cities, the Sorbonne and the Jagiellonian University respectively. The development of Cchristianity in Paris and Krakow is then presented, as well as the development of industry and crafts, with a focus on the professional communities called “guilds”. The practical part explains the exact origin of the chosen odonyms, their changes and some interesting facts about the history of the streets. The conclusion presents the final observations and encourages readers to reflect further on urban toponymy.
