Materialistic orientation and the desire for people with a narcissistic personality to have children

Narcyzm jest konstruktem stosunkowo często podejmowanym w literaturze, zwłaszcza w ostatnich latach, nie zostało natomiast przeprowadzonych wiele badań opisujących jego związek z orientacją materialistyczną, zwłaszcza w odniesieniu do planowania potomstwa w przyszłości. W niniejszej pracy dokonano analizy zależności między orientacją materialistyczną a chęcią posiadania dzieci u osób narcystycznych. Spodziewano się wykrycia korelacji między orientacją materialistyczną a poziomem narcyzmu, zakładano także, że osoby narcystyczne o silnej orientacji materialistycznej rzadziej będą deklarowały chęć posiadania potomstwa w porównaniu do osób narcystycznych o słabej orientacji materialistycznej. Oczekiwano, że zależność ta będzie silniejsza w grupie kobiet w porównaniu do grupy mężczyzn. W analizach uwzględniono 677 osób w wieku od 18 do 35 lat, w tym 576 kobiet i 101 mężczyzn. Hipoteza dotycząca związku pomiędzy poziomem narcyzmu a siłą orientacji materialistycznej w populacji ogólnej i w grupie kobiet została potwierdzona, takiej zależności nie zaobserwowano natomiast w grupie mężczyzn. Z kolei hipoteza mówiąca, że osoby narcystyczne o silnej orientacji materialistycznej rzadziej będą deklarowały chęć posiadania dzieci w porównaniu do osób narcystycznych o słabej orientacji materialistycznej nie znalazła potwierdzenia. Rekomenduje się przeprowadzenie dalszych badań analizujących pojęcie narcyzmu w kontekście chęci posiadania dzieci, również w odniesieniu do innych zmiennych, takich jak aspiracje zawodowe.

Narcissism is a construct that has been taken up relatively often in the literature, especially in recent years, but there have been not many studies describing its relationship with materialistic orientation, especially with regard to future offspring planning. This study analyzes the relationship between materialistic orientation and the desire to have children in narcissistic people. It was expected to detect a correlation between the materialistic orientation and the level of narcissism, moreover, it was assumed that narcissistic people with a strong materialistic orientation would be less likely to declare a desire to have children than narcissistic people with a weak materialistic orientation. It was expected that this relationship would be stronger in the group of women compared to the group of men. In the study participated 677 people aged between 18 and 35, including 576 women and 101 men. The hypothesis regarding the relationship between the level of narcissism and the strength of materialistic orientation in the general population and in the group of women was confirmed, however, such a relation was not observed in the group of men. On the other hand, the hypothesis that narcissists with a strong materialistic orientation will less often declare the will to have children compared to narcissists with a weak materialistic orientation was not confirmed. It is recommended to conduct further research analyzing the concept of narcissism in the context of desire to have children, also in relation to other variables, such as career aspirations.
