The principle of Self-Reliance in the philosophy of Ralph Waldo Emerson

Charakterystycznym postulatem ruchu amerykańskich transcendentalistów była zasada „self-reliance”, która wyraża autonomiczną postawę jednostki jako niezależnie kształtującej egzystencję oraz uczestniczącej bez konformizmu we współtworzeniu kultury. Wśród przedstawicieli transcendentalizmu reguła samodzielności została najpełniej rozwinięta przez Ralpha Waldo Emersona. Celem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest omówienie poglądów Emersona dotyczących rzeczonej zasady. Początkowe analizy uwzględniają metafizyczne przekonania wczesnego okresu jego twórczości. Stosowny przejaw zasady „self-reliance” będzie następnie ukazany względem znaczenia wzorców kultury dla twórczo działającej jednostki. Na końcu zostaną przedstawione następstwa takiej aktywności. Praca magisterska eksponuje moralną wartość samodzielnej jednostki, która umniejsza własny egoizm. Autor uwzględnia historyczny rozwój myśli Emersona, zaś recepcję zasady „self-reliance” traktuje jako postulat uniwersalny.

A characteristic postulate of the American Transcendentalist movement was the principle of self-reliance, which expresses the autonomous attitude of the individual as independently shaping existence and participating without conformism in the cocreation of culture. Among the representatives of Transcendentalism, the self-reliance rule was most fully developed by Ralph Waldo Emerson. The purpose of this master’s thesis is to discuss Emerson's views on the said principle. The initial analysis takes into account the metaphysical beliefs of the early period of his work. The relevant manifestation of the principle of self-reliance will then be shown in relation to the importance of cultural patterns for the creatively active individual. Finally, the consequences of such activity will be presented. The thesis exposes the moral value of the self-reliant individual who belittles his own egoism. The autor takes into account the historical development of Emerson's thought, while the reception of the principle of self-reliance is treated as a universal postulate.
