How do we name our dogs and why? Sociolinguistic analysis of the names of Golden Retrievers in Poland, Portugal and Brazil

Przedmiotem niniejszej pracy jest analiza imion nadawanych psom rasy golden retriever w Polsce, Portugalii i Brazylii. Naszym celem jest wskazanie i opis podobieństw między wybieranymi zoonimami i motywacją właścicieli z trzech wymienionych krajów. Część teoretyczna pracy zawiera definicję onomastyki i związanych z nią kluczowych pojęć. Dokonujemy także zwięzłego opisu gatunku (canis lupus familiaris) wraz z charakterystyką rasy golden retriever. Część praktyczna dysertacji skupia się na analizie zebranych zoonimów pod kątem semantycznym, morfologicznym i ze względu na ich popularność. Przybliżamy także okoliczności, które przyczyniły się do wyboru wskazanych imion. Ostatnia część zawiera wnioski i obserwacje poczynione po przeprowadzonym badaniu

The subject of this thesis is an analysis of golden retrievers’ names in Poland, Portugal, and Brazil. Our objective is to indicate and describe similarities between the zoonyms and motivation of the owners from the three mentioned countries. The theoretical part includes a definition of onomastics and crucial terms related to it. We also describe the species (canis lupus familiaris) and characterize the golden retriever. The practical part is focused on the analysis of the collected zoonyms based on criteria such as semantics, morphology, and popularity. We also approximate the circumstances that contributed to the selection of given names. The last part contains our conclusions and observations made after the realization of the study.

O objeto deste trabalho é uma análise dos nomes de cães da raça golden retriever usados na Polónia, em Portugal e no Brasil. O nosso fim é apontar e descrever as semelhanças entre os zoónimos e a motivação na escolha deles nos três países mencionados. A parte teórica da dissertação contém uma definição da onomástica e dos termos cruciais relacionados com ela. Descrevemos também brevemente a espécie (canis lupus familiaris) e caracterizamos a raça golden retriever. A parte prática foca-se na análise dos zoónimos recolhidos segundo a critério semântico, morfológico e segundo a popularidade. Aproximamos também as circunstâncias que contribuíram para a seleção dos nomes indicados. A última parte contém as conclusões e observações feitas após a realização do estudo.
