The language of the past, the languages of the future. Polish translation of Too Like the Lightning by Ada Palmer in the light of Mikhail Bakhtins theory of the novel

Praca stanowi próbę przeprowadzenia analizy porównawczej sposobów kształtowania „obrazu języka” w powieści fantastyczno-naukowej Too Like the Lightning Ady Palmer (2016) oraz jej polskim przekładzie autorstwa Michała Jakuszewskiego. Korzystając z Bachtinowskiego repertuaru pojęciowego, autorka prowadzi badania na gruncie poetyki przekładu artystycznego. Po krótkiej prezentacji problematyki powieści Palmer oraz jej recepcji w Polsce i za granicą, autorka przechodzi do rekapitulacji takich elementów Bachtinowskiej teorii powieści, jak (m.in.) wielo- i różnojęzyczność, cudze słowo, hybrydyzacja, obraz języka w powieści. Na tak przygotowanym gruncie zostaje podjęta próba zidentyfikowania i nazwania kluczowych elementów wpływających na kształtowanie obrazu języka w powieści Palmer i przekładzie Jakuszewskiego. Obraz języka wyłaniający się z przekładu powieści różni się jednak od „oryginalnego”, na co znaczący wpływ mają obrane przez tłumacza strategie wobec takich problemów, jak stylizacja czy płeć w przekładzie.

This paper is an attempt at a comparative analysis of the ways in which an image of language is shaped in Too Like the Lightning (2016) – a science fiction novel by Ada Palmer – and its Polish translation by Michał Jakuszewski. Using Mikhail Bakhtin’s notional and conceptual repertoire, the author conducts research on the ground of the poetics of translation. Following the short presentation of Too Like the Lightning’s issues and reception (in Poland and abroad), the author recapitulates the elements of Bakhtinian theory of the novel such as heteroglossia, other’s word, hybridization, the image of the language in a novel (among others). On such a ground, an attempt is made to identify and name the key elements influencing the shaping of the image of language in Palmer's novel and Jakuszewski's translation. However, the image of language emerging from the translation of the novel differs from the "original" one, which is significantly influenced by the strategies adopted by the translator towards problems such as stylization or gender in translation.
