Icons from the Carpathian Mountains Region in the 'Spiritual Treasure of Ukraine' Museum in Kyiv

"Spiritual Treasures of Ukraine" museum in Kiev includes over 400 icons from XV to XIX century. Among them there are also several examples whose stylistic features indicate that they originate from Carpathian Ruthenia, Pokuttya, or Maramureș. They are characterised by a simplified form, a limited colour palette, schematic composition, stylistic forms evident in previous centuries, engraved golden background and wooden, deeply carved frames. Six of these icons are described in this article. The icon of the Mother of God on the Throne was painted by Michail Popovich from Kolomyia, whose works there are in churches in Budeşti-Josani and in Budeşti-Susani. The Annunciation from the end of the 17th century was created by painter of icons in Hǎrnicești in Maramureș and Bǎlan Josani. The 18th century icon, The Descent of the Holy Spirit is painted in similar style like Saint Nicholas from Shelestovo near Mukachevo, now in the Museum of Folk Architecture and Life in Uzhgorod. And three icons, Christ Pantocrator, Virgin Hodegetria and Archangel Michael come from the same painter’s workshop as Three Saint Hierarchs in the Museum of Regional Ethnography in Ivano-Frankivsk.
