"The Winter’s Tale" in G. Ehrenberg’s and L. Ulrich’s translations as staged in 19th-century Kraków theatres

Artykuł traktuje o cenzorskich i reżyserskich ingerencjach w tkankę tekstu dramatycznego dwóch dziewiętnastowiecznych polskich przekładów "Zimowej opowieści" Szekspira – autorstwa Gustawa Ehrenberga i Leona Ulricha. W oparciu o analizę skreśleń widocznych na archiwalnych egzemplarzach teatralnych z Galicji z lat 70. i 90. XIX wieku podjęto próbę odtworzenia m.in. kreacji Antoniny Hoffmann w prapremierowym polskim wystawieniu tej sztuki na deskach Teatr Krakowskiego, nazwanego później Starym Teatrem (1877, przeł. G. Ehrenberg) oraz wpływu cenzury obyczajowej i politycznej na język i ton inscenizacji zaprezentowanej w 1896 na podstawie przekładów Ehrenberga i Ulricha w nowym gmachu Teatru Miejskiego (obecnie Teatr im. Juliusza Słowackiego) w Krakowie.

The paper presents censors’ and stage directors’ interferences into the fabric of two 19th-century Polish translations of Shakespeare’s "The Winter’s Tale" by Gustaw Ehrenberg and Leon Ulrich. Relying upon the analysis of the passages and scenes that censors or directors had deleted from the translations, the author attempts to recreate the way in which a famous Polish actress Antonina Hoffmann performed the role of Hermione in the Polish premiere of the play in 1877 in Kraków, and what the impact of moral and political censorship was upon the language and mood of the adaptation staged in the new building of Municipal Theatre in Kraków in 1896.
