E.E. in 2022 : young, angry, and female?
The article outlines the differences in the practices of self-identification of emigrants from Eastern Europe in the period 1980-90 and those in 2022. There is an evident shift towards more critical assessments of Western Europe, and more assertive attitudes are displayed, regarding the agency and subjectivity of refugees. Expected changes in memory studies include: 1/strengthening the position of Eastern Europeans as agents in research on the region’s memory cultures and structures; 2/acknowledgment of existing intellectual property as it relates to knowledge about the region; 3/ recognition for Eastern European archives and testimonies 4/Recognition for Eastern European languages and the knowledge expressed through their use. Their much disired effect may be the Eastern European turn in decolonial and memory studies.
